In the introduction to the story in Partners in Wonder, Ellison writes about how Algis Budrys was a mentor to him in his early writing profession, reading his tales, introducing him to people in the sector, and providing a job model of what knowledgeable author regarded like. Collected in the Beast That Shouted Love at the heart of the World, Deathbird Stories, and The Illustrated Harlan Ellison. The tip of the story in the Beast That Shouted etc. indicates it was written in Los Angeles intermittently in 1963, 1965, and 1968. In his introduction to the guide, Ellison says the story was impressed by a six-year-lengthy chain of paranoid events. As the other story goes, Lansky and his proper-hand man, Bugsy Seigel, checked out a Las Vegas desert and saw its potential as a playing Mecca.
