King Edward I (known as Edward "Longshanks") came to the throne of England in 1272, two years after Wallace was born. Kubrick himself later expressed embarrassment with Fear and Desire, and tried over time to maintain prints of the film out of circulation. He clashed with Ballard in the course of the taking pictures, and on one occasion Kubrick threatened to fire Ballard following a digicam dispute, regardless of being aged only 27 and 20 years Ballard's junior. The Union in Hollywood stated that Kubrick would not be permitted to be both the director and the cinematographer, resulting within the hiring of veteran cinematographer Lucien Ballard. Douglas hired Kubrick for a reported $150,000 fee to take over course soon after he fired director Anthony Mann. At the time, this was the most costly movie ever made in America, and Kubrick turned the youngest director in Hollywood history to make an epic. The Killing did not secure a proper launch across the United States; the movie made little money, and was promoted solely at the final minute, as a second characteristic to the Western film Bandido! Kubrick had, at 31, already directed 4 feature films, and this became his largest by far, with a forged of over 10,000 and a budget of $6 million.
